Obligations Of Christians Philippians 2

In Philippians 2, the apostle Paul encourages Christians to have the same mindset as Jesus Christ, who, though being in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but humbled himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross.

Paul goes on to say that because of Jesus' humility and obedience, God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Paul then encourages Christians to live in a manner worthy of the gospel, by being united in spirit, striving together for the faith of the gospel, and not being frightened in any way by those who oppose them.

In Philippians 2, Paul emphasises the importance of humility and obedience for Christians, drawing on the example of Jesus Christ. He writes that Jesus, though being in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but humbled himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross. This humility and obedience, Paul suggests, is something that Christians should strive to emulate.

Humility in this context means having a correct and modest view of oneself, not thinking more highly of oneself than one ought. Recognising that one is not above or better than others and putting others above oneself.

Obedience refers to following the commands or instructions given by God or a leader. In the case of Christians, obedience means following the teachings of Jesus and carrying out the will of God as revealed in the Bible.

Both humility and obedience are important qualities for Christians because they help to keep them focused on serving God and others, rather than themselves. However humility should not be confused with having a low self esteem nor should confidence be confused with pride.
